Ofra Haza – “Im Nin’Alu” – from 1978

Heard a bit of the BBC Radio 4 documentary “The Israeli Madonna” the other day, sending me off on a mission to find the version of “Im Nin’Alu” that I remember – the house-meets-synthpop “Played in Full” remix, which was a weird step back in time, ‘cos I don’t think I’ve heard it since it came out in 1988. Proustian pop chills aside, I prefer this stripped down live version from 1978.

Also, you’ve got to check the “Yemenite Songs” version for that much-sampled spine-tingling acapella intro, if nothing else. It’s mentioned in the documentary that Ofra Haza came to the UK for a gig at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, presumably in the late 80s, and one of the players kept the DAT tapes from those rehearsals – think there’s a snatch of it at about 15 minutes in, and it sounds great – do wonder if that might find its way onto the web somehow.
